Edexcel English Language Paper 1: imaginative writing
Edexcel prints photographs and offers a choice of tasks based on them. The images belong to the section rather than to one option, which is not always obvious from how the page is laid out.
The essentials
| Board | Edexcel |
| Paper | Language Paper 1, Section B |
| Marks | 40 |
| Suggested time | about 45 minutes, including planning |
Mark totals here are read from real past papers ingested into Marked, not from a revision site: 40 marks across the 13 Edexcel Paper 1s in our corpus. Timings are our own guidance rather than anything the board specifies.
What the question asks
A choice between imaginative writing tasks, with photographs printed for the section. You answer one.
The images are a starting point, not a description exercise. You are not required to account for everything in them.
What it assesses
| Objective | What it means here |
|---|---|
| AO5: content and organisation | The larger share. Communication, tone and how the piece is shaped for its reader. |
| AO6: technical accuracy | Vocabulary, sentence structure, spelling and punctuation. |
What costs marks
- Describing the photograph. It is a prompt. An inventory of what is visible is not imaginative writing.
- Dithering over the choice. Two minutes deciding is fine; ten is a paragraph lost.
- Neglecting technical accuracy, which carries a substantial share of the marks on this task.
- Beginning without an ending in mind. Running out of time here reads as an unfinished piece.
How to practise it
Practise from images you have not chosen yourself. Picking your own removes the part that is actually hard.
Write to the full time limit. The skill being tested includes finishing.
Have accuracy measured rather than estimated, since it is very difficult to see errors in your own writing.
