GCSEs in England are graded from 9 to 1, with 9 the highest. There is no fixed percentage for each grade. After a paper has been marked, the exam board sets the boundaries for that paper in that series, so the same raw mark can earn a different grade from one year to the next. Boards publish them on results day.
The Department for Education calls a grade 4 a standard pass and a grade 5 a strong pass.
Which calculator to use
The quick estimate takes a mark and a total and works from an average of the real grade boundaries we hold from AQA, Edexcel, OCR and WJEC/Eduqas. Use it when you have a mark from a mock or a practice paper and just want a sense of where it sits.
If you know the exact board, paper and series, use the calculator for that paper instead. It applies that series' own published boundaries rather than an average.
Either way, treat the result as a guide. Your final grade is worked out from your combined marks across every paper in the qualification.
