WJEC and Eduqas GCSE English

WJEC is the only board here with tiered Literature papers, and its Language units mix short structured questions in with the longer responses.

How the papers are built

Units rather than papers, with some Literature units sat at Foundation or Higher tier.

What to watch for on this board

The reading units include question types that are not free writing at all: selecting, ordering, or marking items. They are marked against a fixed answer rather than judged as prose.

Set-text sections usually print a choice of two essays. Reading both before committing costs a minute and regularly changes which one you should attempt.

Tiering matters. Foundation and Higher papers on the same unit are different papers with different demands, so practise the one you are entered for.

Marking against this board

Assessment objectives are not weighted identically across boards, or even across papers within one board. An answer marked against the wrong board's weightings gets a plausible-looking grade that means nothing.

You choose your board when you sign up, and it decides which weightings your answers are graded against. Where WJEC/Eduqas publishes a level-descriptor grid, the band your response matches sets the mark range and your marks come from that band rather than a generic percentage. What the grade was built from is shown with every result, so you can check the reasoning instead of trusting the number.

How the grade is computed covers that in full, including the limits.
