Edexcel (Pearson) GCSE English
Edexcel's papers are closer in shape to AQA's than most students expect, with two differences that catch people out: the picture prompt on Language Paper 1, and questions printed in lettered parts.
How the papers are built
Two papers in each subject. Several Literature questions print lettered parts, each carrying its own marks.
| Paper | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Language Paper 1 | Fiction reading, then imaginative writing offering a choice of tasks based on printed photographs. |
| Language Paper 2 | Non-fiction across two texts, including comparison, plus a transactional writing task. |
| Literature Paper 1 | Shakespeare and post-1914 British literature, with questions frequently split into lettered parts. |
| Literature Paper 2 | The nineteenth-century novel, anthology poetry, and an unseen poetry comparison. |
What to watch for on this board
Language Paper 1 Section B prints photographs and offers a choice between them. Both options are picture-prompted, so the images belong to the section rather than to one question.
Where a question prints parts (a) and (b), they are marked separately and both must be answered. Treating them as one flowing essay loses the marks allocated to the part you skipped.
The transactional writing task names a form and an audience. Ignoring either is a straightforward way to lose marks that had nothing to do with the quality of the writing.
Marking against this board
Assessment objectives are not weighted identically across boards, or even across papers within one board. An answer marked against the wrong board's weightings gets a plausible-looking grade that means nothing.
You choose your board when you sign up, and it decides which weightings your answers are graded against. Where Edexcel publishes a level-descriptor grid, the band your response matches sets the mark range and your marks come from that band rather than a generic percentage. What the grade was built from is shown with every result, so you can check the reasoning instead of trusting the number.
How the grade is computed covers that in full, including the limits.
Question guides for this board
Each one covers a single question: what it asks for, the real tariff from our own ingested papers, and what reliably costs marks.
